Introduction

Nawada district, located in the southern part of Bihar, is one of the 38 districts of the state. Nawada town serves as the administrative headquarters. The district spans an area of 2,494 square kilometers and is located at 24.88°N latitude and 85.53°E longitude.

In 1845, Nawada was established as a subdivision of Gaya district. On 26 January 1973, Nawada became a separate district. The name “Nawada” is believed to be derived from “Nau-abad,” meaning “new town,” which was once known as Eliot Market (Bazaar). The district is divided by the Khuri River, with the older portion on the left bank and the more modern area, including public offices and facilities, on the right bank.

The Sarvodaya Ashram in Nawada, inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad and nurtured by Jayaprakash Narayan, is an important landmark contributing to the district’s historical significance.


Location

Nawada is situated in the Magadh division of South Bihar at coordinates 24.88°N and 85.53°E. The district has an average elevation of about 80 meters above sea level and an area of approximately 2,492 square kilometers.

Nawada shares its borders with Nalanda district to the north, Sheikhpura and Jamui districts to the east, Gaya district to the west, and the Jharkhand districts of Koderma and Giridih to the south.


History and Cultural Background

Nawada is a region of considerable historical importance. The Magadh Empire was founded by King Brihadratha in this region, and it was later ruled by prominent dynasties such as the Mauryas and the Guptas.

The Surya Narayana Mandir of Handiya is an ancient temple believed to have been established during the Dwaparayuga by King Jarasandha. The temple is historically significant and attracts large numbers of visitors every year. Handiya is surrounded by the Rajgir Hills to the north and a river to the south.

Other notable historical and religious sites near Nawada include Tapoban, Sitamarhi, Bodhgaya, Pawapuri, Rajgir, and Nalanda.


Geography and Physiography

Nawada lies in the South-West Alluvial Plain agro-climatic zone of Bihar. The district does not have significant perennial rivers. The terrain is largely plain, with rocky areas found along the southern border where the land gradually meets the plateau region of Jharkhand.


Climate and Rainfall

The climate of Nawada is sub-tropical to sub-humid, characterized by hot summers and cool winters. Winter temperatures range between 4°C and 16°C, while summer temperatures can rise up to 46°C. The monsoon season typically begins in the third week of June and continues until September. The average annual rainfall in the district is approximately 996.5 mm.

The important rivers flowing through the district include:

  • Panchane
  • Bhusri
  • Tilaiya
  • Dhanarjay

These rivers are generally seasonal in nature and have shallow, wide, sandy beds.

  • Loam – Found in Nawada, Sirdala and Akbarpur
  • Sandy Soil – Found in Nawada, Sirdala and Hisua
  • Clay Soil – Found in Pakribarawan and Kawakole
  • Sandy Loam – Found in Nawada, Warisaliganj, Akbarpur, Narhat and Hisua
  • Clay Loam – Found in Rajauli and Sirdala

Infrastructure

Nawada has a well-developed road network. Major routes include National Highway 31 and National Highway 82 along with four State Highways and approximately 120 km of state roads, connecting the district with other parts of Bihar and neighboring Jharkhand.

The district falls under the jurisdiction of East Central Railway, and the Gaya–Kiul railway line passes through it. The nearest airport is Bodhgaya Airport, located approximately 58 km from Nawada.


Economic Profile

Agriculture is the primary economic activity in the district, with about 78% of the population dependent on farming. Animal husbandry and wage labor serve as secondary sources of livelihood.

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra located at Sarvodaya Ashram promotes modern agricultural technologies in the region. Although there are no major industries in Nawada, some small and medium enterprises operate in sectors such as silk weaving and stone chip production.

The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited has also identified Rajauli as a potential site for establishing a nuclear power plant.


Tourism

Nawada district offers several tourist attractions including Kakolat Waterfall, Sekho Devra Ashram, Hariya Sun Temple, and Baba Majaar. The district’s proximity to internationally known destinations such as Bodhgaya, Rajgir, and Nalanda also enhances its tourism potential.


Demographic Data

According to the Census of India 2011, Nawada district has a population of 2,219,146, comprising 1,144,668 males and 1,074,478 females. The district contains approximately 337,353 households.
